Throughout life we will encounter hurdles and challenges and if we can learn to be strong and resilient we can minimise the effect these setbacks will have on us.
“We are all born Princes but the civilising process turns us into frogs” Eric Berne.
Many mental illnesses and conditions start from the bad thoughts that we have about ourselves….likewise much joy and energy flows from the good and positive thoughts that we have about ourselves. The Thrive programme will teach you how to minimise the bad thoughts and as you learn to control your mind you will begin to recognise how you think is how you feel. Manage your thinking~ manage your feelings~ manage your life.
If your thinking style is unhelpful to you it will affect your feelings and behaviour.
People with negative thoughts seem to look at the bad things in a situation and assume that things will always go wrong. People with obsessive thoughts seem to worry, brood and think about every experience in every single detail. People with a compulsive thinking style tend to want immediate satisfaction. People with a paranoid thinking style worry that other people are out to criticise, reject, exploit or harm them. If you have a black and white thinking style you may be very rigid and inflexible. People with a catastrophic thinking style may magnify, exaggerate or blow everything out of proportion. Perfectionists set themselves ridiculously high standards and therefore set themselves up to fail when these standards cannot be maintained. People with a hyper vigilant thinking style are permanently on alert and can be over sensitive to negative cues resulting in a loss of the real situation. Some people have learned helplessness as a thinking style and truly believe that they are helpless to change their situation and continue to behave in a helpless manner.
Kept in perspective a little bit of any of the above or more than likely a combination of a few can be useful and constructive but when they escalate and grow they are harder to manage.
“Man is disturbed not by things, but the views he takes of them”. Epictetus
